If you’ve been hanging out in the Village lately, you’ve probably spotted Danny Selman zipping around on an electric scooter.
Volt Scooter Rentals has quickly become a staple in the Village and a clear sign that summer has arrived in uptown Saint John. We caught up with Dan to chat about Volt, what made him want to be his own boss, and what it’s like to be part of the Container Village.
Q: What’s your favourite colour?
A: Black!
Q: How did you come across the opportunity to own this business?
A: I’ve been with Woodchucks Axe Throwing for a few years now, and when the chance to buy Volt Scooter Rentals came up from someone there, it just felt like the perfect timing for me.
Q: What excites you most about running your own business?
A: What really excites me is having the freedom to make my own decisions and shape the business the way I want. It’s great to be able to adapt and try new things as I go along.
Q: Did you have a different job before you opened your business? What did you do?
A: I’ve been bartending and lane coaching at Woodchucks Axe Throwing for the past two and a half years. (Lane coaching involves helping people perfect their axe-throwing skills and making sure they have a great time.)
Q: Is your container village location your first brick-and-mortar retail shop?
A: Yes it is!
Q: What do you like most about being set up at AREA 506?
A: I love AREA 506 because there’s always something happening. It’s a fun spot and a great place to meet all kinds of people.
Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: That’s shifted a lot as I grew up, but one thing that always stuck with me was the idea of owning my own business and being my own boss.
Q: Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?
A: I would tell myself not to overthink things. Instead, be patient and let things happen naturally.
Q: What do you consider your biggest success?
A: Canada Day was definitely our biggest success so far. We set new records that day, and I’m hoping we can keep the momentum going.
Q: What’s next?
A: We’re in the middle of a rebrand, and we’re excited to keep growing and having fun with it along the way.
