“…Drawing together hints of new wave and dreamy pop with straight ahead rock momentum.” – Grid City Magazine
The Backstays formed in January, 2018 just after Pete Johnston moved back home to work on a lobster boat. After meeting Keith Whipple, the two began searching for like minded musicians. Since recruiting local musicians Serenna Chapman, Derek Hilchie and Lorne Kirkpatrick, The Backstays have released their debut EP in their hometown of Saint John, NB and are working on recording their first full length LP to be released next year.
The crux of the EP’s sound is a fusion of indie and roots rock with a style that is both modern and classic. Lyrically, the songs talk about everything from love and loss, to alienation at the workplace, all while taking you through the turbulent industrial port city of Saint John.
The lead single, Dreams, reached #1 on the East Coast Countdown. Groundhog Gale ’76 was named the 12th best song in the top 100 songs of 2018 by The East Magazine. The band was recognized as the 2018 Stingray Music Rising Star at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival. All of this before the band’s one year anniversary.
